critics

I consider myself a reasonably well-informed consumer, especially when it comes to movies and music. Rarely do I see a film or buy an album I haven’t read several reviews of (often all on Metacritic). I suppose in the case of movies, I often spoil some of the story for myself, but I can live with that. I take everything with a grain of salt, as well; often movies that score “average” reviews are still enjoyable enough for the eight-dollar (or 8.25$, when I’m in Franklin) price tag.

This is why it was so odd when I saw The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on Saturday, knowing practically nothing about it. Well, okay, I know it’s a book written by Douglas Adams. But I hadn’t read a single review, nor had I checked out its IMDb page. Perhaps I was busy. Perhaps it’s because my Powerbook is experiencing…issues.

Is it better to see movies “blind?” I’m still not sure. Hitchhiker was definitely, as one critic put it, uneven. But it was fun, and, hey, has generally favorable reviews.

I think I would rather get all of the books read before seeing it. My parents saw it and enjoyed it, though, which I can’t decide gives the movie a positive or negative edge, haha.

I usually go by the words of three critics. I know that if one of them absolutely loves the flick, I’m certain that I will feel the opposite. And there’s only one that I have been aligned with. However, I hate critics who give away the ending (i.e. the critics at Entertainment Weekly).

I generally trust your movie judgement. I’ve bought several DVDs based on recommendations from here…

i’m a big fan when it comes to the trilogy; personally i feel if you have a least a bare frame of reference, it’s to your advantage. that being said, the adage that too much knowledge is a bad thing should be kept in mind. in short. my advice is; browse thru the first book. by the way, the movie is pretty good. regards; j.h.

Dude. I just read your post on types you find attractive. I would have laughed out loud, but I’m at school and I would have scared people. Regardless. I think it was hot. And Jeff likes Star Wars and video games. Geek.
