Exchange

This is a story about euros. I kid you not.

A little over a month ago, I started auditioning text editors for my Mac, for the following two reasons: (a) I wanted a really good text editor for my Mac, and (b) I wanted to regain some of the “geek points” I lose for using Dreamweaver (although its editor does have some nice features).

032806-textmate.png I settled on TextMate after using it for just a short while, because it’s so awesome and powerful and, most of all, pretty. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for an OS X text editor.

Anyway, I downloaded the 30-day trial they offer, and I used it, and everyone was happy. Unfortunately, my 30 days came to a close. And it’s time to buy. And I need to buy, but I don’t want to part with the cash (because I never want to part with the cash). TextMate is 39 euros (about 47$, according to Google), so I keep holding out hope and crossing my fingers that the dollar will, sometime soon, gain some strength and that dollar amount will go down. Alas, no dice yet, but I keep checking. How funny that international currency exchange rates are dictating my software purchases.

I think this is day five without TextMate, but I’m not sure. I’ll break down soon.

Years ago, I used BBEdit Lite. Bare Bones discontinued it, but it’s been replaced by TextWrangler, also free. You probably tried it out, so I’m guessing it didn’t suit your needs..? But… FREEEE.

Clearly I hate paying for applications, or anything really.

Well, the dollar dictates most of my ebay-shopping so I keep hoping that the dollar looses strength. It has gained a bit too much the last couple of months, or it might be the Swedish Krona, that gets weaker. Well, well.. troublesome indeed.

I assume you mean you want to use this for personal use… if you’re using it for work could you not just get your employer to pay for it?

I’ve been doing lots of Rails coding, and when TextMate expired, I immediately bought it. I was so hooked on it I didn’t care how much it happened to be at the time. A text editor that good is like crack (not that I would know :) ).

I’ve been using TextWrangler (from Barebones Software) for the past week or so. it’s okay – I had some issues with it at first, but as I use it more and more, I’m finding more features I like. ….although, after this glowing review of TextMate, perhaps I’ll look into switching…

If you don’t have a problem with piracy, download Serial Box.
