paragiraffe I love arugula.

Just hug my lips and say good lies

052606-tapesntapes.jpg Meet the new focus of my new, all-consuming, intense, quite possibly fleeting, music obsession: Tapes ‘n Tapes. I can’t decide if it’s my love of rockin’ out in the car to The Loon or their impossibly fun to say name (come on! Tapes ‘n Tapes!) that I adore more. On 3hive they were called “a less fashionable Clap Your Hands Say Yeah,” and, besides that I hate how everything is compared to CYHSY now, I don’t know if I particularly agree… but you’ll have to see for yourself. Supposedly they’re heavily influenced by Pavement and the Pixies.

So, you can’t buy this album on iTunes or on eMusic at the moment (God, I’m so pretentious), but, lucky for you, some of the best tracks are available for free on their website:

“Insistor” is a particular favorite, and “sets Grier’s pained murmuring over a speedy country two-step beat that threatens to run out of control, but never does” (Rolling Stone). If you can, though, don’t miss the rest, including “10 Gallon Ascots,” on which you’ll hear the unmistakable sound of sleigh bells. This unexpected instrumentation scored them a few bonus points with me. Oh, and I love the cover art.
