Wal-mart: charmed

I know I’ve talked here before about how I loathe Wal-mart, because, really I loathe Wal-mart. This past Friday, though, I had a very few things to get at a grocery-type store, and Wal-mart is so close and on my way home, unlike everywhere else, so I decided to brave it.

First of all, I got right out of my building’s parking lot and across the street to Wal-mart’s parking lot. Usually I have to wait a little while to turn left onto the busy street, and usually on Friday it’s worse. I got a sweet parking spot right up front. I went in the side door to avoid the Boy Scouts selling overpriced popcorn.

At the front of the store, I wandered the produce area for a couple of minutes searching for bananas. I thought, I’ll go to the back and get my other stuff, and I’ll have an easier time finding the bananas when I return. I went further back into the store to get coffee and yogurt, and when I came back up front the bananas magically appeared, out of nowhere!

I didn’t have to wait in line to check out, and when I approached the register, the cashier was talking to another cashier, but the second cashier ended their conversation so that I could be helped. I kid you not. They have those bag carousels at the express lanes, where it’s really easy to leave one of your bags behind, so my cashier made sure I knew I had three bags and had them all with me when I left the store. I kid you not.

If every Wal-mart trip was like this, I might actually go there.

Ben and I have effectively cut Wal-Mart from our lives. The first night we moved here to Nashville, we were in a serious fix for some ice cream – at 11:30 p.m. So we wandered around until we found the local Wal-Mart. You probably know the rest of the story.. no parking.. only one cashier lane open.. screaming babies.. attention Wal-Mart shoppers.. ice cream melted by the time we got to the apartment. Honestly, I think cutting Wal-Mart out has been the best decision we’ve ever made.

If we can’t BUY ice cream at 11:30, we can’t EAT ice cream at 11:30.

I dunno. I always FEEL bad when I leave a Wal-Mart, like I was just an accomplice to a heinous crime. Even if all my Wal-Mart experiences were like that, I still don’t think I’d go.

It’s funny, because the WalMart by my house has never been too bad. Crowded (but every store around here is) but I’ve never had any bad experiences… UNTIL NOW. They’re converting it into a Super WalMart (yeah I guess we’re a little late on that one!) and the other night we went in there and couldn’t find ANYTHING. It was insane… I’m hoping it gets better once the construction is done.. but I have a feeling it’s only going to attract more people. So I might just have to stick with Target!

I used to be a wal-mart fan. The first time I went to Target I thought that it was crappy… the “bootleg” version of Wal-Mart, but my opinion changed once I saw how clean and organized it is compared to Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart for the win!

Nothing wrong with the Wal-Mart’s here. A lot of the stores in the USA are being remodeled because the Corps think they need to be done. But working there’s alright. I make a decent pay and get a good discount. I’m nice to the customers anyway, not every associate gives a shit about who they’re waiting on.

As awesome as your Walmart shopping experience was, I still can’t help but feel a little disconcerted about buying fruit at Walmart.

Still, congrats on being brave enough to do it!
