Last week Shaun and I were in Publix buying groceries, and he stopped in front of this brown bread in a can.
He decided it would be an adventure, and bought it to try. Bread in a can? What?
I was born in New England, where this…delicacy…is popular. I can’t remember eating this as a kid, but my Mom could tell me. I do remember seeing the cans at the grocery store. According to Wikipedia, brown bread is usually cooked in a can, so buying it canned makes sense. You just open it up, slice it up and eat it.
I had mine toasted with jelly, and I have to say it’s about as good as you’d expect from bread out of a can. Maybe it’s because I didn’t have it with the baked beans and hot dogs.

I wonder if there’s a best before date included? :o
I remember hot dogs or spam, baked beans and brown bread being a staple on Saturday nights when I was growing up. Grandpa loved it. My favorite part was the brown bread. YUM.
Your father was not a fan (except for the hot dog part, as you know) so I never made it for you when you were growing up.SORRYYYY…
p.s Grandma always put margarine on her brown bread.
The fact that your mom puts “/your mom” on her username to reply, means she’s FULL of WIN. Go Kitt’n!

I eat chili from a can all the time. We don’t even chili in our family really…
I grew up eating this with hot dogs on Saturday night with my grandparents. Truth be told I love this stuff! Not with raisins though ;)
I haven’t had it in years. I may have to pick some up just for nostalgia.
We had a can of this in our pantry for like ten years. I can’t remember when Maureen Chace/your mom threw it away.
UPDATE: Brown bread SPOTTED in pantry. From Shaw’s of course.
This is my favorite thread of comments on a Maura site, ever.
