sky captain

19 sep 04

I saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow last night. It was different, interesting, and there were really honestly only a few times where I was not buying the CGI. However, I found that it borrowed heavily from the following movies:

  1. Jurassic Park

  2. Indiana Jones

  3. Star Wars

  4. Superman

  5. Top Gun

  6. Batman

Let me know what you think if you saw it.

I thought it was fantastical. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something with its visual style, which is quite nifty. The story is a bit thin and cheesy but not unenjoyable. It’s minimal-investment adventure that’s fun, I’d say.

I enjoyed it, but not to the point that I thought I would. Glad Conran was able to pull it off, though.

I haven’t seen it (yet) but I can’t help but think “beautiful” everytime I see a screenshot from the film. It always appears to be so… magical.

Why wouldn’t you want to steal, no borrow, from probably the “best” 5 movies of our lifetime?

I read an article that said the film was intended to borrow from about a billion others (those five may or may not have been on the list but were undoubtedly intended). I think the specific line I read was that they wanted it “to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before and like everything you’ve ever seen before.”
