file formats: good and bad

03 nov 05

File formats I’m into:

  1. GIF—clean and light
  2. PNG—clean and light, better than GIFs, just need some support for alpha channels in IE
  3. PDF—works for everyone, very printable
  4. TXT—who doesn’t love a plain text file?
  5. PSD—mmm Photoshop
  6. HTML, PHP, CSS—for obvious reasons
  7. CSV—data, but without the annoying Excel formatting

File formats I’m not so fond of:

  1. JPG—artifact-y
  2. The notes files that Dreamweaver and Fireworks maintain—so annoying
  3. ASP—gross

I’m with you on hating those frickin’ notes files. Excuse the language, but they really get my goat.

I’m with you on GIF and PNG. Never realized how valuable GIF really was. I’ve started to avoid JPG when I can in web work. And I remember a time when I would use JPG for everything.

Have you seen PDF embedded as Flash? It’s something called Flash Paper, a built-in reader. I’m not sure if I’m a fan.
