cyberstalking

17 nov 05

AOL used to (maybe still does, not sure) have a feature where if you sent an email to another AOL user it would tell you if and when they’d read it, and, if they hadn’t yet, you could recall it. And, in high school, everyone was on AOL. This was kind of nice when you sent a nasty message you shouldn’t have, or when you wanted to know if that boy you had a crush on read your email. Voyeuristic, perhaps, but I love having some idea about what people are doing online.

Now? We’ve got read receipts. I find these rude, however, and I rarely send them back.

However, if you’ve got a website, you’ve got statistics: who is visiting your site, when, and from where. Yes, I see you. And you. And you: you visit my site but can’t find a moment to email me back. And then there’s all those IP addresses I don’t recognize, but you can geolocate those babies.

Yes, I may have too much time on my hands between 11.00pm and 12.00am.

But can your server logs tell you what sort of face I’m making right now?

I didn’t think so.

I put a web bug in a CD we made. It hits our web server any time someone opens the CD online.

I do agree read receipts are very annoying. I especially despise the people who make them a part of every email they send.,

I used to always wish there was a function on all computer called ‘stalk’ or something similarily comical. Upon clicking you could enter an IP address and then instantly a menu would pop up allowing you to surf through a myriad of different options like ‘see where this person is right now’.

Yes, that would be my insane mind speaking right now.
