using names

31 oct 05

Something I suck at is using a person’s name in conversation. I’m actually pretty okay with remembering them, but something about using them I find completely awkward. I know it’s positive and people like hearing their own names and it makes it personal, but it’s hard for me. Mostly, I beat myself up over not reciprocating when people use my name. Anyway, if I’ve ever given the impression I don’t care because I don’t use your name, I apologize.

Aside from getting someone’s attention, I don’t use people’s names in conversation - ever. I’m odd; that’s my excuse.

It’s okay, Maura.

I barely ever use someone’s name in conversation. I use it next to never. I also get weirded out when someone uses my name in conversation too; especially when it’s used as the period or a conclusion to their sentence.

If anything, I think it makes the conversation feel even more impersonal.

I don’t do it either. It’s totally awkward. It drives me nuts when people overuse my name too. Makes me feel like I’ve done something wrong.
