Cookies

17 aug 06

I made some chocolate chip cookies tonight. Six dozen, in fact. Actually, there are only seventy now, because I ate two of them.

I just made the tried-and-true Toll House recipe, with a few modifications. First, I always use half butter and half shortening, something I picked up from my mother. This is a great cookie hack because it gives you the richness of butter but the shortening prevents them from spreading too much. I tried melting the butter this time, which is a tip a read about on some website somewhere, because supposedly melted butter creams better with the sugars. I noticed no difference. I tried more vanilla, because I love vanilla. Finally, I used fairly finely chopped pecans instead of walnuts, which is great because there’s nutty goodness throughout.

This stuff isn’t that exciting, but I’m really enjoying experimenting with baking. This is bad news for my waistline, so I’m trying to exercise restraint with the frequency.

I saw something somewhere about using half butter, half shortening for cookies for the same reason. I’ll have to try it out sometime.

I love cookies! Send me some. We use “making cookies” as a euphemism. TMI - I know ;)

Toll House cookies are my absolute favorite baked good. Nothing else compares. I skip the nuts entirely though. Why mess with something that’s already perfect?

SIX dozen?! Wow! What’re you going to do with ALL those cookies? If you need to get rid of any, let me know… I’ll send you my address! :)

i was gonna ask & say the exact same thing as stef!

i know how proud i’d be if i could make cookies that don’t require opening the package & putting on a cookie shit & cooking. coughs

:) maybe one day i’ll be at your level!

Was it Butter flavored shortening? Such a thing exists, and some would argue it tastes more buttery than butter….. (but you still have to use half real butter)

Dissolve baking soda into hot water… this has totally changed my perspective on chocolate chip cookies.

i used butter flavored shortening once and the cookies weren’t that great. i don’t recommend it. they tasted a little fake. i love baking! i give away/sell cookies pretty often just so they’re not sitting around my house.

Sounds like you had a very good evening. I LOVE chocolate chip cookies warm from the oven with a tall glass of cold sweet milk.

ACK! I was reading about the cookies. My mouth was watering. And then you put some nuts in them. Nuts! Nuts do not belong in chocolate chip cookies. Nuts ruin cookies with their nutty taste. Leave nuts in the can! Leave cookies soft and gooey. Nuts! Nuts!

A Toll House store was just put in at a local shopping area. It’s so difficult to go by there without diving in. How can people work there and not gain 5,000 pounds? Wonderful, yummy snacks. Have you tried Toll House Pie? It’s one of my all-time favorites. :o)
