Almost hypocritically, my most favorite Christmas songs are the uber-traditional ones, like “The First Noel,” “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “What Child Is This,” and “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem,” you know, songs about the 8 pounds, 6 ounces baby Jesus. Just this year, I’ve developed a particular appreciation for “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” although “O Holy Night” is my favorite Christmas carol by far. I have an arrangement for this on piano that I play pretty much year-round.

Songs I don’t really like? “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” Silly stuff like “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” I don’t particularly care for songs about Santa or Frosty.

You know, I actually wanted to talk about songs in the first place because of Aubrey’s post about Christmas music, where she talks about why she doesn’t like “Baby It’s Cold Outside”:

I like listening to a song where the female singer asks if the male singer has spiked her drink and both of them singing about how their reputations will be saved if she caught pneumonia and died. Lovely.

I actually like that one, but I see her point!

O Holy Night kicks Silent Night’s ass, by the way.

You know, if songs were corporeal and could attack each other in street fights.

normally i’m all about cmas songs, but this year they are all just really getting on my nerves.

O Holy Night kicks much ass.

And I think it’s just because I didn’t grow up listening to Baby It’s Cold Outside. I grew up listening to “Wonderful Christmastime”, which most people think is awful, but I enjoy.

Try O Holy Night by N’Sync. It’s actually really good.

Maybe she should listen to the Dean Martin version….
