Vote

02 nov 06

I voted early for the upcoming election today. There are a couple of things I am willing to tell you about my ballot.

First of all, there’s a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages, and although there’s technically already a DOMA law, an amendment would make us look even dumber to the rest of the civilized world. (But marrying your cousin is legal in Tennessee, so that tells you how forward-thinking we are.) It will, of course, pass with flying colors, but I went specifically to vote against it. I believe constitutions are in place to protect rights, not take them away, and our stupidly high divorce rate is what is really ruining marriage/families.

There’s also a senate race on, one which you might have heard of since it’s gained national attention. Bob Corker is the Republican nominee, conservative, and the former mayor of Chattanooga. Harold Ford, Jr. is the Democratic nominee, although he’s basically a Republican, too. I don’t think either of these guys is a good idea, so I didn’t vote for one or the other. Actually, this was kind of a missed opportunity to do a write-in for Mickey Mouse. (I must also mention that Corker calls Ford “attractive” on his website, which I find pretty funny.)

Anyway, it felt great to do my civic duty.

Go you for doing your civic duty and making Tennessee a safer place.

As a fairly die-hard democrat, I had to have someone convince me that voting for Jr. as the democratic nominee was the right thing to do. We want a democratic majority in the senate as well as the house - and having a democrat in name is better than a republican ANY day. Just my 2 cents of course.
