Song Choices

17 nov 06

In my sidebar over there, I pull the last 5 songs from my Last.fm account. I do this with a little PHP and a feed parser and blah blah blah </end programming crap>

Anyway, I only send songs to Last.fm from my work computer, which is the base machine for all of my music, although now that I have a MacBook (awesome!) with 120GB hard drive, I might switch that. Regardless, on Friday afternoons, I usually make sure the last few things I’ve listened to are non-embarrassing, as they’ll be listed on my website all weekend.

Recently, I’ve experimented with letting my iPod pick the songs I run to (random) rather than picking a specific playlist. A couple of weeks ago, the first song it chose for my workout was, appropriately, “Run,” by Ben Kweller. Since then, I’ve put my faith in the shuffle, and I’ve learned, for example, that “Mr. Tough” by Yo La Tengo is an excellent running song, something I would have never discovered on my own.

As a thought, what I’ve setup recently has been working very well.

At work I have a windows desktop that servers itunes music. it has nice speakers plugged into it if I want to play stuff outloud, or I can stream it to my powerbook (g4, need to upgrade) and play it through itunes there. so at work both machines can upload to last.fm

at home, similar situation because I have a desktop in the office streaming music to any device that can handle it, typically my laptop again, with the last.fm plugin. It’s been working for me and other than making sure I have plenty of music on my work machine It’s been pretty successful.
