Tune Your Run

09 oct 06

100906-nikeplus.jpg This weekend I bought the Nike + iPod Sport Kit so I can track my workouts and tell how far I’ve gone if I’m not running on a treadmill or a trail with distance markers. I let my gym membership expire last month, so it’s just me and my sneakers and my exercise ball, which is kind of cool, actually.

I didn’t have any Velcro handy to attach the transmitter to my laces, so I first tried the tongue-slitting and inserting option, but this actually worked out really poorly for me. I ran a cool, twenty-minute mile. I’m so fast. While I probably could have tried calibrating it in that position, I cut a hole in the padding inside the bottom of my shoe and put it there instead. This seems to work better.

It’s nice to get updates during your workout, and hopefully I’ll see some improvement after a while. I just needed some extra motivation for all those times when Shaun isn’t running backwards in front of me saying, “Come on, Chace! I’m making pancakes when we get home!”

Does that make me sound like an asshole? Because, I mean, I did make pancakes when we got home.

Alrighty, I’ve been using this gizmo since it came out (I was so excited I pre-ordered) and I’ve got some advice. I also don’t have the Nike + shoes and the sensor resides comfortably usually somewhere between the tongue/laces and the shoe. So it’s “inside” the shoe, really, but it’s between the tongue and the shoe. It’s not uncomfortable at all and the sensor does not fall out.

Second, the sensor is slightly off, but not by much. I use it even when I’m on the treadmill, too, because I like to have all my runs tracked on the nike website. It’s actually pretty cool to see your progress mapped (even though I’ve had de-progress).

I like how when you reach a new milestone, too, Lance Armstrong or Paula Radcliffe will tell you good job at the end of your workout. I find myself wanting to do better just so I get congratulated by them. :)

All in all, I love this gadget. It is half the reason I use my iPod, and I listen to it pretty much all day long at work. Congratulations on buying a great product!

Oh yeah, what’s your favorite music to run to? I love House.

Wow, that would be amazing motivation for me to get out and run. It is kind of a shame that I need technology to exercise.

It sounds so fun!

HOPEFULLY you’ll see some improvement. Amen.

Oh, and this is a comment for that picture on your flikr of the 5k.

I hope those people have chips.

Hey I just got my nike kit too, but no need to cut the shoes, I purchased a 9.99 sensor holder officially called (Sportsuitâ„¢ Sensor+ for iPod nano) from http://www.marware.com/

Oh wow! Thanks for posting that, Wayne. I might either order or DIY one myself. Thanks again!
