In a rare feat considering my ever-increasing age, Shaun and I saw 5! bands in 2! days this weekend.
Band #1: Lavendar Diamond was the opener on Friday, and I have just one word for you: no. They’re kind of folksy and have a female lead singer, and, well, “have a female lead singer” is almost always a no for me. She was quite a character and had a sparkly pink headband.
Band #2: The Decemberists rocked out a lot harder than I expected. I really like their new album. Colin Meloy also did the cute but somewhat cliché rock show stunts: he organized sing-alongs, took pictures of the audience, made city-appropriate banter between songs.
Band #3: I think they were called My Hero Our Hero? They were a local Athens band and were the opener opener on Saturday night. Decent. I couldn’t find a website for them.
Band #4: Annuals were… not good. My ears still hurt, and it wasn’t so much the volume, it was just all too much. I didn’t understand a word they sang, and I think they had 34589345 musicians on stage. It’s funny, though, because on the drive back Shaun and I talked about all the things they could do to be better, because their songs weren’t awful, actually, and they had a lot of energy. Their site is really bad.
Band #5: Tapes ‘n Tapes! After missing them in June, I was really glad to get a second chance. They put on a good show. Download “Insistor” now. (Also, their song, “Jakov’s Suite,” is in one of the new Nissan commercials.)

No, band #1 is called Lackluster Craphound. Band #3 was, I think, called Our Hero. And don’t forget band #6, the dude playing kid’s songs at the Botanical Garden on Sunday.
