Renting V Owning

02 apr 07

My apartment complex sends out a monthly newsletter, which includes seasonal content I’m sure they buy from some apartment complex newsletter store. April’s issue included a list entitled, “Renting is the Smart Choice When You…” containing such gems as

First, I think it is really funny that anyone would try to convince you that, as a general rule, renting is superior to owning. I’ve got an answer to all of those points: buy a condo. Few homeowners actually know any lawn chemistry (is that even real?). Pay the neighbor to mow your lawn. Sorry, renting isn’t really a Smart Choice.

Oh, yes, but I rent anyway, because I’m poor. I like to think about houses, though, and I think maybe it’s because it’s spring, but I’ve been doing it more lately. I have a good sense of what I like (brick! bathrooms! hardwoods! under mounted sinks!) and what I don’t like (galley kitchens). Renting? Pshaw. I can’t tear up my counter tops or knock down a wall while I’m renting. And those things are very relaxing!

Oh, new life plan! I’m just going to move back in with Mom & Dad after college and live there until I save up enough for a house! HOORAY!

My complex is part of a national group. They have places all along the East Coast, including my home town, though I didn’t know until I looked on the Web. They have similar sorts of dribble which I try to avoid reading. :)

I am lazy. So these points initially seem appealing. However, I still think I’d rather own over renting if only to not have to include making a rental payment as part of my retirement plan.

Actually, if you are smart with your money, owning isn’t the be all and end all of everything. you can still end up well off in the end, and you won’t be poor ;)
