This is the Bank of America building in midtown Atlanta. It’s tall. I didn’t know this until I moved here, but it is actually the 26th tallest building in the world as of the time of this writing, which means it probably dropped a spot or two before you finished reading this sentence. It measures and impressive 1023 ft (ah, geekily I’d like it to be 1024), and it is the tallest building in the United States outside of Chicago and New York.
The Atlanta skyline is really interesting. It is more or less in three separate parts: downtown (where I work), midtown (where I live) and Buckhead (where you shop). The disjointed skyline mirrors the tremendous sprawl of the greater metro area, although I am sure the developers want to turn all of Peachtree Street into one long skyline. It’s a mass of highrise condo construction right now, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to move in (so long as it’s quiet enough).

I’m partial to a different view of Atlanta. The Pencil may be the tallest, but in my mind I count it as the most boring building archetype in Atlanta. I much rather prefer the southern side of Peachtree road it’s buildings and attractions, and arguably where most of the Flavor of Atlanta lay. Even if that flavor is the horrid acrid tourist trap of Atlanta Underground.
This is my favorite view thus far:
