At SuperTarget tonight doing my regular weekly grocery shopping, I wandered over to the housewares section because I was looking for Pyrex measuring cups, but they only had expensive ones with lids so I passed. What I did find, though, was a (just one) Chefmate Dutch Oven or Round Cast Iron Casserole Pot with Lid as they call it.
If you don’t read food blogs like I do (I have a category in my feed reader for food/crafty stuff entitled “Home Ec”), this may not mean that much to you. But as it turns out, Cook’s Illustrated rated this pot as good as a Le Creuset in a recent review of Dutch ovens (or so I read on Not Martha) at literally a fraction of the cost. It’s pretty, it’s really heavy, and apparently they are getting harder and harder to come by. It’ll be nice when a recipe starts out with something like “melt butter in the bottom of a Dutch oven,” and I won’t have to fudge it in a stockpot.
In other news, now that I have a real Dutch oven I can make the famous No-knead Bread. I knew it would take a while, but I was a little disappointed to find that I wouldn’t be able to bake it today. I figure I will start the dough before I go to bed and pick up when I get home from work tomorrow. See also Smitten Kitchen on No-knead, Not Martha on No-knead, and No-knead bread takes over the world.

Funny, I just got back from Target. Good thing I didn’t read this post until now. Stop mentioning food related items that I must buy. Should it strike anybody as odd that I know what a Le Creuset is? Damn. Shut up Shaun, I know, I know…

I thought a Dutch Oven was one of those sexual positions like Donkey Punch…but grats…i’ve also been browsing the housewares at Target.
