I don’t think I’ve ever officially mentioned this, but since July I’ve been working as a web developer at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. (And might be timely to mention the opinions expressed here are my own and do not reflect those of the AJC, Cox Newspapers, Cox Enterprises nor any other party.) During my exhaustive job search (hey, I was subscribed to a lot of feeds!) I was desperately hoping, but not expecting, to find a job where I could work primarily with Django, the Web framework for perfectionists with deadlines. Well, this was just that position, and actually as a result I moved about a month earlier than planned. (The job is why I’ve been posting more about Django, which, alas, is not going to stop.)
I work in a great team and we work in editorial (vs classifieds) so we get to do a lot of interesting things. I’ve gotten a lot better with Django, and I even write tests for my code now — crazy! And, yes, I do it all on a Mac.
If you are in the area and love Flash like I love Django, I know some people who would like to hear from you — we’re hiring a multimedia producer. I’ll put a bit of the job description below, and feel free to contact me if you’re interested.
The interactive producer is part content developer, part artist — both with an emphasis on delivering a product that is smart and useful to the ajc.com audience. The candidate’s strong grasp of Flash and ActionScript is needed to build dynamic interactives. He or she would join a three-person multimedia team that includes an audio/video specialist and a multimedia/producer artist. This applicant is more than a graphic artist with an interest in multimedia, but also has the capability of creating dynamic interactive elements such as games. He/she brings a sense of humor and a light touch to the ajc.com website.

Fascinating. I developed content management systems for publishers in several verticals throughout the 90s (including quite a few newspapers).
I’m curious if AJC has used Django to integrate print and web workflows.
btw, it’s nice to have found yet another southern MA native in the industry…I grew up in Fall River.

You’re very lucky to have landing a job at AJC. I’ve tried to join the copy desk on the editorial side for several months to no avail. Luckily, I found a slot at a newspaper in Pennsylvania. Good luck with your position and finding a talented person for the producer job.
