In all of my blogging history, I’ve had very little problems with spam. I’ve always kept a really tight rein on my comments, shutting them off after thirty days or two weeks, instantly killing anything wayward that came along. I wrote up my tactics back when I was on Movable Type.
Anyway, when I wrote my Django blog, I built Akismet into the commenting functionality, via its Python module. Right after I launched I had a ton of problems with the API, mostly that it was down and my reader’s comments would get eaten and I would get ugly 500 error notifications. I actually removed it for a while, then put it back.
I hadn’t thought about it until recently, because for some reason I am getting a daily comment spammer who really wants to sell you that ED drug that begins with a C. What do you know? Comment spam is still alive and well, and Akismet works.
