Self-geocoding “hackery”

23 jan 08

Due to peer pressure, I signed up to be a Django Person today. That’s me. I couldn’t believe a Simon Willison project launched without OpenID, but oh, wow, that’s already been fixed.

When you sign up you geolocate yourself, with the following caveat:

Your map location will be shared in public, so only make it as accurate as makes you comfortable.

So, it’s not a big secret that I live in Atlanta, in Midtown, but I may not want to tell everyone exactly where my building is. That’s why I geolocated myself in Piedmont Park. It’s very close, so you get the general area, and on the upside, I live in a tree. (Alternately, some of my coworkers geolocated themselves around work.)
